Meet maker, Oli Carter of Adventurous Joinery. Oli blends traditional English timber framing with the precision of Japanese carpentry to create gorgeous furniture. Using sustainably sourced timber—including wood from Britain’s tallest ash tree—Oli has crafted coffee tables as unique as the tree it came from, each piece is made-to-order and a celebration of individuality, honouring the journey from forest to home. We’re thrilled to embark on this creative collaboration and continue our commitment to beautifully crafted, British-made furniture.
The tables are made with solid English ash and reclaimed greenheart timber, both of which are known for being incredibly durable woods. The greenheart used in these tables comes from Southampton docks, where it lived under the sea for 90 years. The original tables were made using timber from what was England’s tallest ash tree.
These tables are made from hardy timber and are built to last. Oli views this as the next phase of the timber’s lifetime: first it was a tree, now it is in table form. As such, some movement may appear, particularly if the table is kept in a hot environment; factors like underfloor heating may exacerbate small cracks. Oli expects his pieces to move over time, so the tables are constructed to withstand this.
Smooth to the touch, each table is finished with a clear one-coat wax to protect it from liquids. That said, anything spilt on the table surface should be mopped up immediately using a clean, damp cloth.
The marble-like grain of the ash tells its story and will be unique on each table; Oli takes great care in selecting each cut, so any knots or whirls are inherent to the timber and are not to be considered flaws.
Each piece and join is hand-cut using traditional joinery techniques, then wedged together using greenheart blocks.
Oli’s work is greatly inspired by Japanese joinery, which has its origins in a time before glue and screws; precision is central to this ancient discipline and the greenheart wedges in our tables are reminiscent of this highly structural style of woodwork.
The tables are made in Oli’s workshop in Milland, which is in the heart of the South Downs National Park.

ACCESS CONSIDERATIONS
When purchasing a topper and mattress together, along with our headboard and bed bases, we recommend that customers consider the size of their hallway, staircase, and doors to make an informed decision regarding access considerations. To ensure your delivery goes as smoothly as possible, it is important to update us about any restrictions or other access issues. For example, the premium nature of our mattress springs means they cannot be bent, so it’s essential to consider how they can be delivered to the room of your choice. For more information please see our section on ‘Preparation & Access’ where we have included an access guide to download.
