Scandinavian Designers we are inspired by

If you are looking for design inspiration, whether it’s architecture or ceramics to exceptional interiors, one simply must take a look at Scandinavia and the minimalist, pleasing products its makers create. With a strong focus on craftsmanship, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish designers are globally renowned for their functional and considered designs (alongside their Nordic neighbours of Finland and Iceland).

We are huge admirers of Scandinavian design here at Maker&Son, the iconic pieces produced are widely studied and classed as a movement that began in the early 20th century, born out of and highly influenced by the Bauhaus styles from Germany. With a shared design ethos no matter the product, every aspect is crafted, examined and discussed. The focus is to create a beautiful object, that most importantly, provides a functional design for the user; a philosophy which is similar to our own at Maker&Son.

With function balanced with form, these designs often take on a minimalist aesthetic, and we admire their quiet confidence. Our inspiration boards and influential list of Scandinavian designers is extensive, we often visit the works of Karre Klint and Arne Jacobsen, creators of quintessential mid-century pieces, for our research and, quite simply as a treat for our eyes! Maker&Son’s outstanding favourites include the Y Wishbone Chair, a stripped-back, curved wood piece by Hans J. Wegner (his chairs are legendary), the Grasshopper lamp by Swedish designer Greta Grossman and every design aspect of Finn Juhl’s house, now a museum, just outside of Copenhagen; if you are in the area we highly recommend a visit.

When it comes to interior design the Scandinavian ethos runs right through the exquisite homes as seen in RUM, Kinfolk and Dossier. These homes are clean and uncluttered yet have every detail in place - right down to the light switch. The colour scheme is usually neutral, with bold, considered pops of colour and wood features - a nod to nature, which creates a soothing, calm ambience. The typical Scandinavian sofa, for instance, has particular aspects we think correlate with our designs, from our love seat to the popular corner sofa. The Scandinavian sofa is often made from natural fabrics, highly crafted and is large enough to fit all the family. Designed to last a lifetime, the scandi sofa sits at the centre of the room, serving as a space for all the family, perfect for those long winter evenings. There is a Danish philosophy called ‘hygge’ - a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being and, as we enter the winter months, we couldn’t agree more.

To decorate, opt for a neutral colourway, light the candles and accessorise with textural throws, cushions and rugs. It’s worth keeping in mind the clean yet considered aesthetics when creating a Scandinavian inspired space, why not opt for our 100% linen sofa in a vibrant hue and make your Maker&Son sofa the focal point of the room, as the Scandi’s do.

So next time you are perusing Pinterest for some inspiration, consider the Scandi’s for distinguished design tips, to refresh and modernise your home for now.
